En Estados Unidos comenzaron a escasear las tabletas de iodo después de que numerosos ciudadanos preocupados las compraran de forma masiva para protegerse de las posibles consecuencias de los accidentes en reactores nucleares en Japón, informa en su edición de hoy el Wall Street Journal.
De acuerdo con el medio, la demanda es tan elevada en la actualidad que algunas pastillas de iodo ya se han agotado. Y eso que las autoridades de control nuclear llamaron el lunes a la calma asegurando que es "muy poco probable" que llegue radiación nociva de Japón a Hawai o a territorio estadounidense.
El portavoz de la Casa Blanca Jay Carny buscó disipar los temores.
"Este es un accidente y una situación que está ocurriendo en Japón y no en Estados Unidos", dijo Carney. "No hay efectos perjudiciales que puedan ocurrir (...) a estadounidenses en suelo norteamericano, debido a las grandes distancias involucradas".
El Departamento de Sanidad en California advirtió a su vez de que el medicamento puede provocar reacciones alérgicas y que por ello no deber ser ingerido sin motivo ni receta.
Los productos del principal fabricante, Anbex Inc., según el Wall Street Journal, se han agotado después de vender más de 10.000 paquetes de pastillas el sábado pasado.
